Interest Rates Are Going Down
The US Fed has finally announced interest rate cuts this week. The first cut in over 4 years!
Two major developments stand out this week: across the pond, the U.S. Federal Reserve has taken a decisive step by cutting interest rates by 0.5% (more than expected by most), aiming to spur economic growth amidst ongoing global uncertainties. Meanwhile, here, the Bank of England has chosen a path of caution, holding interest rates steady to navigate through inflation concerns and market sensitivities.
What does that mean for the average Brit? Even though the base interest rate has stayed flat, we are seeing mortgage lenders cutting rates to compete for customers with some options at under 4%. It’s always difficult to know when to ‘lock in’ to a ‘good’ rate and the BBC article link below looks at this more. For UK investors with a diversified, global portfolio, the US Fed interest rate cut should be positive news for investment markets which is reflected in the tables below with 2 major US stock indexes now at +20% for 2024.
Key Articles I Have Read This Week:
BBC look at the dangers of being what they call a FOMO mortgage hunter as interest rates start to fall. Useful read if you’re near to remortgaging: Read it here
Al Jazeera covered the US Fed reducing interest rates by 0.5% nicely. This was a bigger than expected cut and some of the reasons are covered here: Read it here
